Thursday 14 - Trip to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg

We woke up and did some early shopping in and site seeing in Colmar and inteded to go to Munster again and try the Cheese Tasting.

Unfortunately, we got there too late and it was closed for lunch and the restaurant was closed for the day.

Before we left, we did a little walkthrough of the Accomodation in Colmar.

We decided we'd take a trip to Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg (opening picture, above), which was about 30 min or so away. This castle was rebuilt by Germany in the late 1800's when Germany ruled the Alsace region. So it's in immaculate condition.

We got to the little town of Saint-Hippolyte, which was just before the castle and stopped for lunch, albeit, a little late at 2:30pm. Luckily, they were still open with a reduced menu. I chose the Tarte Flambe, which is a local specialty; like a pizza, but cheese base instead of Tomato.

The castle was a bit of a walk up hill, but well worth it. Fantastic place. Mum didn't go into the castle as she was buggered walking up the hill, and the castle was FULL of staircases, which would have taxed here too much.

Afterwards, we drove home the back way through all the small winery towns of Rorschwihr, Bergheim, Ribeauville, Riquewihr and Bennheim. It's an amazing vineyard area with the cutest, pretiest towns. Best looking wine region I've ever seen.

We finished the day with some bread, cheese and ham for a light dinner.
