Saturday 16 - Drive down to the Canal du Midi via le Pont du Gard

Not much to say about today, but a long drive down to the south of France.

Pretty hectic driving here. We mostly cruised at 130kmh on a very packed tollway.

The little Renault Megane we hired was not the most stable at that speed and didn't have a lot of power. I must admit that I was a little stressed and tired with this drive as it took most of the day, the weather was changeable, being sometimes sunny or damp. At one stage we saw a minor accident on the otherside of the tollway and the emergency services had the whole road closed, three or four lanes wide that was blocked for about 15 kilometres.

After a few hours we stopped at the Pont du Gard, the largest Aquaduct made by the Romans; it was and amazing site.

We then had a simple lunch and headed off towards Beziers, where we had to hand back the car. And wow, they do not know how to make decent coffee here. They had a decent two group head espresso machine, but they did not tamp down the coffee, and after they espressed the coffee, they used the same grinds again for the next person. Ughh! It was very weak and inciped coffee. Weak and inciped coffee was a common theme in most of France unfortunately. I think we're spoiled in Melbourne.

We originally intended to stop off at the town of Nimes which had the most complete Roman Colleseum that was still in use today, but we ran out of time.

Beziers was a bit hectic. We waited about an hour to get a taxi as it seemed they were flat out. The Rugby world cup is on and it was causing a bit of stress in the system.

We met Jim and Christine at the Beziers train station and went to Capestang to meet up with the boat we hired.

We had a meal that night in the restaurant at the wharf.
